READYMADE – Shinichi Kaneko PHOTOGRAPHS　　

The series “READYMADE” by still life photography specialist Shinichi Kaneko features plastic containers collected from around the world, captured with unique lighting techniques.

The process involves setting up the lighting, slowly rotating the subject, adjusting the camera height, and assessing the shadows. This method is likened to the strategic game of tsume-shogi. When the individuality of the object is fully brought out, the plastic containers transcend their original roles, presenting themselves as entirely different entities to the viewer.

As a photographic methodology, Kaneko employs a technique where strong light is applied and then finished with filter work to create a matte effect, minimizing surface reflections to reveal the hidden appearance and presence of the objects.

The plastic products are collected from 20 cities worldwide. Kaneko visited many cities, exploring suburban megastores, DIY centers, and mid-sized urban supermarkets to find interestingly shaped bottles.

The term “readymade” was coined by Marcel Duchamp to describe a concept in contemporary art, referring to a series of works based on industrial products, defined as “a total lack of taste” or “visual indifference.” In contrast, Kaneko’s approach aims to “discover new stories” in these prefabricated items.
