This book is a record of photographer Yu Yamauchi’s five-year journey across Mongolia and China’s Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region. It is a newly revised edition of “Planet”, which was published in 2020, re-edited based on experiences Yamauchi gained after the original release.
What began as a journey driven by Yamauchi’s interest in the nomadic lifestyle and the harmony between nature and humanity ultimately revealed four major scenes captured in his photographs:
Landscapes reminiscent of Earth’s creation, bathed in the light of countless stars from tens of thousands of light-years away.
Pastoral images of nomads and animals living in harmony with nature, unchanged through the ages.
Snapshots of contemporary urban life centered around economic activity.
And finally, desert landscapes evoking a near-future world straight out of science fiction, visited at the end of his journey.
These scenes seem as though they trace humanity’s progress from the past to the future, but in reality, they coexist side by side in the present.
Different worlds exist in parallel, each living its own distinct “now.”
Amid these various realities shaped by different places and individuals, what do we choose, and how do we exist? The landscapes depicted in this work invite us to question the nature of the present moment.
In “Dawn”, Yamauchi captured the absolute world as he moved between the cosmos and Earth. In “JINEN”, he delved into the depths of his own consciousness within a forest, exploring how our relationship with nature is relative. This work now addresses how individual consciousnesses and worlds come together to form parallel dimensions of time and space.
The transcendent scenes captured in this book lead readers on a multifaceted journey.
Unpublished works have been added to the section depicting the nomadic lifestyle, with a redesigned layout to showcase the photographs in larger format.
The chapter on snapshots of contemporary cities has been completely restructured.
The desert section now includes gatefold pages, and while the cover design retains elements from the original, other specifications have been updated, resulting in a significantly renewed edition.
