This is the official catalog for the exhibition “Glass Tableware in Still Life: Yoko Andersson Yamano and 18 Painters,” which began at the Hiroshima City Museum of Contemporary Art in 2013 and toured nationwide.
In addition to the catalogued images of the exhibited works (paintings, glass, photography) specifically shot for this book, it includes a complete list of works, an interview with Yamano, essays by curators from each venue, and columns by glass history experts, providing a comprehensive overview of the exhibition.
The clear glass tableware, with its subtle distortions unique to hand-blown glass, the intimate paintings by artists who received these pieces, and the monochrome photographs capturing a sense of weightlessness—all three forms of expression invite the viewer to reflect deeply on “glass tableware.”
The “Glass Tableware in Still Life” project began in 2018, initiated by glass artist Yoko Andersson Yamano, who resides in Sweden. Yamano crafted glass vessels, which were then depicted in still life paintings by 18 artists. These artists, coming from diverse cultural backgrounds, created their works through dialogue expressed via words and imagination, using the familiar material of glass. Photographer Masahiro Sanbe captured the glassware and still lifes in the artists’ studios, culminating in an art book. The exhibition took place in November 2023.
