A new-style reference book featuring the collaboration between Osamu Tezuka’s original manga and Osamu Dezaki’s OVA storyboards—a unique blend of two legendary creators named “Osamu” in “Black Jack”!
Published to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the “Black Jack” series, this book brings together both the manga (original) and animation sides. It includes storyboards drawn by Dezaki, who debuted as a manga artist in rental graphic magazines before joining Mushi Production, focusing on the episode “Carte IV: Anorexia – The Two Black Doctors,” which features Black Jack’s greatest rival, Dr. Kiriko. Various setting materials and references are also included from the animation side.
From the original manga, the book includes the episode “The Fear Germ (original title: The Grim Reaper’s Incarnation),” which marks Dr. Kiriko’s first appearance, printed in its raw manuscript version that preserves pencil lines. The complete manga version of “The Two Black Doctors,” which shares the same title as the anime, and all the chapter covers featuring Dr. Kiriko (which were omitted in the comic release) are also included.
Black Jack, one of the most iconic characters created by the “God of Manga” Osamu Tezuka, who pioneered and shaped post-war Japanese culture, represents a complex hero. Though an “egotist” who charges exorbitant fees as a genius unlicensed doctor, he is also a “humanist” who deeply respects human life and the will to live—a character full of contradictions that made him a beloved symbol in Japanese manga.
The book is set to include interviews with industry veterans like producer Masao Maruyama and director Gisaburo Sugii, who were familiar with both Tezuka and Dezaki from their days at Mushi Production.
This is a must-have for fans of Tezuka, Dezaki, Black Jack, and anyone interested in Japanese manga and anime culture.
