This book introduces iconic scenes from representative Tezuka works along with character sheets of typical characters. Representative characters are introduced in the style of a talent directory, complete with a list of “appearances.”
Furthermore, it includes sections where you can overview characters from Tezuka’s major works from his early years to his later years that are not part of the star system, as well as mascots created by Tezuka for companies and organizations, offering a wealth of valuable materials that are being published for the first time.
The book features the complete series of “Toshisaku Makaritooru,” the only work named after the famous supporting character “Higeoyaji” (real name: Toshisaku Ban), which has been called a phantom work because it was never collected in a single volume before. It also contains an abundance of rare drafts and storyboards that cannot be seen elsewhere.
Tezuka Osamu’s works feature a vast array of characters. Naturally, each work has its protagonists and supporting characters, but Tezuka treated the characters he created as actors, assigning them roles in various works. This concept, based on Hollywood’s star system, allowed for a character to be the protagonist in one work and then appear as an antagonist or a supporting role in another.
