Hideaki Anno
Born in Yamaguchi Prefecture in 1960. He began creating independent films during his student years and later worked as a key animator on TV anime Super Dimension Fortress Macross (1982) and the theatrical anime Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind (1984). In 1988, he made his directorial debut in anime with the OVA Gunbuster. In 1995, he directed the TV anime Neon Genesis Evangelion, which, along with the 1997 film Neon Genesis Evangelion: The End of Evangelion, became a social phenomenon. In 1998, he directed his first live-action film, Love & Pop. In 2006, he founded the animation studio Khara, Inc. and became its president. In the studio’s Rebuild of Evangelion series (2007–), he served as the original creator, screenwriter, chief director, and executive producer. For the live-action film Shin Godzilla (2016), he worked as both screenwriter and chief director. In March 2021, Evangelion: 3.0+1.0 Thrice Upon a Time was released, earning 10.28 billion yen at the box office. In April 2022, he was awarded the Medal with Purple Ribbon. In May 2022, the live-action film Shin Ultraman, for which he was the planner and screenwriter, was released. In March 2023, the live-action film Shin Kamen Rider, which he wrote and directed, was released.
