Author profile
Shigeru Mizuki
A manga artist, and a leading figure in yokai paintings and yokai research. Born in 1922, he grew up in Sakaiminato City, Tottori Prefecture. During the Pacific War, he was deployed to the fierce battleground of Rabaul, where he was bombed and lost his left arm. After returning from the war, he became a kamishibai artist, and later turned to rental manga. In 2003, he was awarded the Order of the Rising Sun, Gold Rays with Rosette. In 2007, he won the Best Comic Book Award at the Angoulême International Comics Festival for “NonNonBa.” In 2010, he was recognized as a Person of Cultural Merit and honored as a Tottori Prefecture Honorary Citizen. He received the Will Eisner Award for Best Asian Work for “Onward Towards Our Noble Deaths” in 2012 and “Showa: A History of Japan” in 2015. He passed away on November 30, 2015, at the age of 93. Other notable works include “GeGeGe no Kitaro,” “Kappa no Sanpei,” and “Akuma-kun.”
