This is the first volume of the complete Studio Ghibli storyboard collection, which includes the complete storyboards for the animated feature film “Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind”.

The storyboards were written by the original author, Hayao Miyazaki, and it is as if you are reading another manga original. The rough brush strokes give the film more life and verve.

Storyboards are also a practical guide for aspiring animators. As you read the detailed explanations and instructions given throughout the storyboards, not to mention how to divide frames and move people, you realize that it is not enough for an animator to be good at drawing pictures alone. They use words more than they use pictures. The accumulation of these skills is what made the movie “Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind” possible.

The article by Mieko Okada (animation researcher) on the eve of the birth of Nausicaa in the Monthly Bulletin is very valuable.
