This book explores how Tomotaka Koizumi, a designer and artist without formal education in fashion, weaves his creativity and shares it with the world. Through visuals and text, it reveals the secrets behind his creative process, including the tools he uses.
The book also offers advice on starting small with social media, marketing, and business strategies.
In February 2019, Koizumi’s talent was discovered via Instagram by Katie Grand, the globally renowned stylist and former editor-in-chief of “LOVE” magazine, now editor-in-chief of “Perfect” magazine. This led to his debut fashion show in New York, supported by Marc Jacobs, makeup artist Pat McGrath, and hairstylist Guido Palau. That pivotal night marked the beginning of his expanding global career.
In 2020, he was selected as one of the winners of the LVMH Prize. In 2021, MISIA wore a multicolored “TOMO KOIZUMI” dress during her national anthem performance at the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games opening ceremony, which gained widespread attention. That same year, Koizumi received the Mainichi Fashion Grand Prize. His archive works are permanently housed at institutions such as New York’s Metropolitan Museum of Art and Australia’s National Gallery of Victoria.
His clientele includes Lady Gaga, Sam Smith, Hikaru Utada, and Naomi Watanabe. Although even “Vogue” editor-in-chief Anna Wintour recognizes his talent, Koizumi has declined offers from major fashion conglomerates that demand adherence to biannual SS and AW schedules, instead pursuing independent creativity to expand his global presence.
