This book by Mrs. Julia D. Carrothers, who can be considered a benefactor to Hasegawa Takejiro for starting to make crepe books, is a rare dual-format book consisting of three crepe pictures and a flat paper book.
It depicts Japan’s 12 months through seasonal events, illustrated with color paintings by leading artists of the time.
January features pine and bamboo with street scenes, February snow and plum blossoms, March the spring equinox and Hina dolls, April cherry blossoms, May wisteria and the Boys’ Festival, June the iris garden, July rain, August lotuses, September moon viewing, October chrysanthemums, November maple leaves, and December a wedding and New Year’s Eve are introduced.
