Sculptor Mio Hashimoto, who has garnered attention from various media outlets including an appearance in a Uniqlo commercial, teaches how to enjoy wood carving.
The book includes how-to instructions for carving palm-sized sculptures such as a cat brooch, a child’s penguin, and a bear on a swing.
In addition, the book features newly photographed wood carved animals that he has created, and can be enjoyed as a collection of his works as well.

This book seems to be a bit more advanced than the Little Wood Carving by Seiji Kawasaki. As the models are a bit more detailed. Also , be sure to use google lens or DeepL to translate and read.As for japanese carving knives, one such provider of japanese carving knives is Michihamono, but they tend to be on the more costly side. I would recommend looking for japanese carving knives on sites such as ebay.
And to be sure to pay attention to the knives suggested in the book, as these will be necessary to complete these projects. You will also need a way to keep your knives honed. One such method are sharpening stones, but a second option are leather strops ( you’ll also need a knife sharpening wax) which are an alternative method of keeping your knives honed. I also recommend looking up instructions how to hone your knives on sites such as youtube.
