Samiro Yunoki, a dyer and artist. More than 70 years of creative activities such as prints, paintings, three-dimensional works, and picture books, including dyed works with bold patterns on cloth by pattern dyeing, are continuing today.

This book was record of the exhibition “Samiro Yunoki life LIFE” held from November 20, 2021 to January 30, 2022 at PLAY! MUSEUM in Tachikawa, Tokyo.

In order to approach the dyed work with a length of about 3 meters, the size of this book uses the A3 variant format. Photographer Taro Hirano took a picture of the work made from 1969 to 2020, and the full-scale cloth cut off from the whole picture is laid out to fill 12 pieces of Kannon.

In addition, typical dyed works, original drawings of funny picture books, and humorous dolls made of paper clay and cloth are also posted. A B1 size poster with the full-scale dyed work cut off is attached as a book cover.

Samiro Yunoki

Dyeing artist / artist. Born in Tokyo in 1922. In 1942, he entered the Department of Aesthetics and Art History, Faculty of Letters, Tokyo Imperial University. In 1946, he worked at the Ohara Museum of Art in Okayama Prefecture, met Soetsu Yanagi’s “Mingei”, and studied under Keisuke Serizawa to become a dyer. She was a professor at Joshibi University of Art and Design in 1972 and president since 1987. In addition to dyeing, she produces and presents various works such as prints, dolls, and picture books. She holds exhibitions at public museums in Japan as well as at the Guimet Oriental Museum in France.
