This book is a collection that chronologically captures contemporary Japanese art born during the Heisei era (1989-2019) and also serves as the catalog for the exhibition “ZIPANGU – Contemporary artists who have run through the Heisei era,” held at the Saga Prefectural Art Museum and the Hiroshima Museum of Art.

ZIPANGU was previously held in 2011 and 2012, during the year of the Great East Japan Earthquake, with the hope that Japanese people, who had lost hope and were feeling down, could be revitalized by seeing and learning about the captivating world of contemporary Japanese art. This third edition looks back on the Heisei era and, together with the works of remarkable contemporary artists, aims to help people reappreciate that the Heisei period, despite its challenges, was a time of peace and prosperity.

Heisei (1989-2019), which came to an end in 2019, followed the Showa era—a period that rose from the ashes of war to achieve rapid economic growth. Heisei, however, is often viewed negatively as a “lost 30 years” due to economic stagnation and the perceived decline in scientific and technological power. On the other hand, in fields such as fashion, architecture, anime, manga, and contemporary art, there were extraordinary achievements and works that will be remembered in history. The title “ZIPANGU” reflects the desire for the Japanese public to rediscover the brilliant achievements of contemporary Japanese artists, whose contributions continue to thrive today.
