Various encounters from the time artist Yoshitomo Nara was born in Hirosaki City, Aomori Prefecture in 1959 to the present. A journey to “The Beginning Place” that shapes him.

Featuring masterpieces dating back to his student days, recent works, items placed here and there in his studio, cherished records, his home, layers of time and space, travels, No War, the rock cafe “33 1/3,” and a small community.

The exhibition is structured around five themes to trace the origins of his sensibility, including venue photos and work illustrations, a detailed chronology of Nara, and essays by researchers.

This is a catalog and book for a solo exhibition held at the Aomori Prefectural Museum of Art from October 14, 2023, to February 25, 2024.

Yoshitomo Nara

Born in1959, in Japan’s Aomori Prefecture.
In 1987, he completed the master’s program at Aichi Prefectural University of Fine Arts and Music.
In1988, he traveled to Germany and enrolled in Kunstakademie Düsseldorf, where he studied and received his Meisterschüler under A.R.Penck.
Nara lived and worked in Cologne from 1994 to 20000, before returning to Japan.
In 1998, he had the experience of serving as a guest professor for a three-month period at UCLA, together with Takashi Murakami.
Nara’s best-known works, his paintings of children with glaring, challenging expressions, have won critical acclaim and international popularity. One of Japan’s leading contemporary artists, Nara’s work is now in the collections of such prestigious institutions as the Museum of Modern Art New York and the Museum of Contemporary Art in Los Angeles.
