Originating and evolving in China during the 9th century, ink painting is a uniquely East Asian art form. This book features works from various periods, starting with the Kamakura and Nanboku-chō periods, when the art was first introduced to Japan, through the Muromachi period, where artists like Shūbun and Sesshū refined the style, and into the Momoyama and Edo periods, when ink painting took on a distinctly Japanese character.
