Artist Tomiyuki Kaneko’s 30-year record of communication with other worlds. An eagerly awaited publication of an unusual “otherworldly experiential painting and writing collection” suffused with an extraordinary aura.
Gods, Buddhas, spirits, yokai, demons, ghosts… Why are the invisible unseen? Is it because it’s better not to see them, or because we are made unable to see them? Tomiyuki Kaneko, a painter who has lived in a remote village in the mountains of Yamagata Prefecture, coexisting with the otherworld as if it were natural, has felt the presence of another world since childhood and experienced a daily life filled with a sense of incongruity. He has traveled to otherworldly places in Japan and across Asia, experiencing the power of these “places” and expressing the unseen in his paintings.
This book is a collection of paintings and writings that transcends boundaries, featuring 200 selected works from mountains of notebooks depicting his mental landscape since his teens, accompanied by entirely new texts.
