Completed in 1966, Japan’s first international conference center and a masterpiece of modernist architecture, the “Kyoto International Conference Center.”

Nestled in Kyoto and embraced by Mount Hiei, this mysterious building combines trapezoidal and inverted trapezoidal shapes, connecting with Takaragaike. It is a monumental construction of the century, completed with the excessive enthusiasm of the high economic growth period, yet this fact is not widely known.

Designed by the young architect Sachio Otani, who was the right-hand man of Kenzo Tange, his work won the top prize in a post-war open competition. Otani remained involved with this exhilarating large space throughout his life until his death in 2013. “BMC” of “Good Building Photo Collection WEST” guides you through this luxurious preservation edition photo book, showcasing the beautiful photographs by Kiyoshi Nishioka and BMC’s unique perspective.

Furthermore, this groundbreaking architecture, which allocated 1% of the total construction cost to collaboration with the arts, can be considered a museum in itself.

Most of the furniture was designed by Isamu Kenmochi, who had close ties with Isamu Noguchi and Bruno Taut. The furniture, designed for the conference center, is scattered throughout its complex spaces, offering new discoveries with each visit.

This book thoroughly introduces its charm through interviews with construction personnel and those who knew Otani and Kenmochi.

This book was planned and produced to commemorate the 10th anniversary of “BMC,” which has been continuously promoting the appeal of buildings from the 1950s to the 1970s.
