Studio Ghibli Executive Officer and Head of the Imaging Department / Executive Imaging Director.
Born in 1963 in Shimane Prefecture.
He joined Asahi Production in 1982 and began his career in photography. His first role as a director of photography was on the theatrical version of “Dirty Pair.” He subsequently served as director of photography for works like “Mobile Suit Gundam: Char’s Counterattack,” “Mobile Suit Gundam F91,” and joined Studio Ghibli productions as a director of photography for “Porco Rosso” and “I Can Hear the Sea.” In 1993, with the establishment of the photography department, he transferred to Studio Ghibli. He participated as the director of photography in “Pom Poko,” “Whisper of the Heart,” “Princess Mononoke,” “My Neighbors the Yamadas,” “From Up on Poppy Hill,” and “The Wind Rises.” He worked on visual direction for “Spirited Away,” “Ghiblies Episode 2,” “Howl’s Moving Castle,” “Tales from Earthsea,” “Ponyo,” “The Secret World of Arrietty,” and “When Marnie Was There.” Other works include “Mary and the Witch’s Flower” (Studio Ponoc, visual direction) and others. He served as the director of photography for Hayao Miyazaki’s latest work, “The Art of the Boy and the Heron”
