Shichiro Kobayashi

Painter. Animation art director.

After graduating from Musashino Art University, he worked as an art teacher at an elementary school before joining Toei Douga in 1964. In 1968, he transferred to Gendai Seisakudan and established Kobayashi Productions.

Contrast of light and shade, dignified air. Famous directors such as Hayao Miyazaki, Osamu Dezaki, Mamoru Oshii, and Kunihiko Ikuhara fell in love with Kobayashi’s art.

Art director for films such as Gutsy Gaeru, Gamba no Bouken, Ganso Tensai Bakabon, Ashita no Joe 2, Lupine the 3rd: The Castle of Cagliostro, Urusei Yatsura 2, and Nodame Cantabile. successively. As a mentor, he also trained art directors such as Kazuo Oga, Hiromasa Ogura, Tsutomu Ishigaki, Toshiharu Mizutani, Koji Ohno, and Kentaro Akiyama. In 1986, he received the Japan Anime Award for Best Art Direction, the Tokyo International Anime Fair Achievement Award in 2009, and the Agency for Cultural Affairs Film Achievement Award in 2011, in recognition of his long-standing achievements.
